Carrera sunglasses come with a heritage, you know what I’m not using that word. It’s boring, they come with an obtuse accumulation of cool, I’m sure that if you snapped through the one of the heat hardened arms it wouldn’t crack it would sound like James Dean clicking his fingers.

 

 

Founded in 1956 by Wilhelm Anger, got to love that name, and was inspired by the Carrera Panamericana auto race, which I think is only too fitting. The race originally ran from 1950 until 1955 and its tracks were only halted after the truly horrendous incident at Le Mans that year had far reaching repercussions. The race was an amazing journey through Mexico to the Texan border routing through winding jungle and treacherous mountain roads that claimed the lives of many. In 1951 Jose Estrada a prosperous Mexico City car dealer and hugely experienced race driver said with some divine irony, ‘I will win, or die trying.’ On the first stage he encountered his own words, skidding from the road and fell 190m down a ravine, both Estrada and his Co-driver were killed.

 

 

I digress; the point being with danger comes excitement, and after all motor racing, especially through hell and high water, is quite possibly the epitome of the life less ordinary, filled with expense and buccaneering excitement. So the marriage between the original racing glasses from Carrera and this highly vivacious sport was almost as inspired as Estrada’s own fatalist words.

 

 

The brand has changed and adapted through the years, moving from Austrian pillars and posts eventually until settling in its current home Padova, Italy. There have been tweaks to the name too, nothing drastic but nonetheless the brand has evolved as most intelligent life does. Their Porsche namesakes climbed into the passenger seat in 1974 and automobile designer Ferdinand Alexander helped in the conception and manufacture of the Carrera Porsche collection.

 

 

These days the natty sunglasses are more likely to be spotted in the pages of Heat or Grazia than say Autosport magazine. Kanye West wears the glasses almost as punctuation; it could be a quiz question. ‘What is Kanye West known for after singing and being quite fond of himself?’ But he isn’t the only one if you Google ‘Carrera Sunglasses celebrity’ it is almost parody for who are the most famous people in the world today! Usher, Will I Am, T.I. Rihanna. Ok, ok, I did say ‘if you’ Google it, so let’s not list too many because as fun as list making is, reading someone else’s is not.

 

 

We have a massive selection here on line and in store for your perusing leisure, I personally love the Gold and tortoise shell Panamerikas, they would be don over rock star dotes. But if the skinny’s and little leather jackets aren’t for you then hit it like Kanye knows, big; either the red or white & clear ‘champions’ really are too much not to.
