Jason Denham, the jeans maker, comes across as somewhat a jeanologist if there ever was such a thing. Maybe he is simply happier to talk about the devil in the detail than most but you can tell that his designs are a labour of love. The company motto ‘worship tradition, destroy convention’ pretty much sums it up, I mean everyone wears jeans, everyone, but it’s the attention to the small print that makes Jason’s that little bit more.

 

Based in Amsterdam, Denham pronounced ‘denim’ by a quirk of fate, is the most recent in a line of projects from Jason having previously founded Blue Blood and Clinic+ the denim design consultancy, oh and also, did I mention designs for Pepe and Bono of U2 fame. I think I may just have. So there is the history, but in the present the launch of Denham in 2008 came as a matter of requisite if not perfect timing as Jason describes it himself. After cyclical influences from America, Japan and Scandinavia Denham took almost single handed responsibility to bring Northern Europe to the fore. This is where the Amsterdam influence comes in, a young city seen as a forefront of creativity, one becoming more and innovative with each year. It houses many record labels and ad’ companies and with the ‘Nine Streets’ becoming a denim centre it is easy to see why Denham saw it as a priority to bed in roots in his home town.

 

In Denham it is the attention to detail that is most impressive, but in an oblique irony it is almost the lack of detail that makes it work. Knowing when to take the pen off the paper is king, if you know what I mean? The scissored logo indicative of the workmanship, workmanship that was added to the classic 1939 ‘Jack Purcell’ recently in what is sure to be the first in a line of intriguing collaborations.

 

So with all considered it is pretty easy to see why at Pilot and Net Clothing we are throwing our weight behind the denim with a bright future. The brand’s versatility is massive within a concise collection offering skinny (Skin VBT), loose carrot and the truly perfectly named ‘salvage cool’ all of which are available in store and on line.
