Donwan Harrell, PRPS creator, is in the line of the postmodern denimologists, smudging roles and nodding in agreement to the metanarrative, in the context of denim at least. Harrell is well interviewed and it is clear his achievements come from a deep southern tradition of Americana, classic cars and the denim uniform of the working man. Once one of Nike’s top ten designers, an achievement that is surprising, I only say this because if his heart strings were ever cut it would be with a pair of tailors’ scissors; a well-used pair of vintage American, jeans makers’ scissors at that. 

 

I think you can only become attentive and interested when someone speaks enthusiastically about their occupation, in the case of Howell maybe preoccupation. The softly spoken jean-smith took two years researching and corroborating advice in Japan before the label was established in 2003. He uses 1950s Levis denim looms that now reside in the land of the setting sun to create authentic denim originals. He notes that the family orientated manufacturing base is important to the brands ‘bruised not broken’ ethos, generating a more particular and individual approach as this particular step in the works needs a certain fondness.

This season’s collection has the same approach as its predecessors; the indigo is grazed through the tight wrap to ensure no two pairs are the same. The oil spots and bleached dots  which give that ‘all American experience’; the experience that isn’t created through a popularist retro, but through the life experience every day second nature. The Barracuda jeans have the hack and slash taken that step further, manufacturing a missing pocket on the backside. The cobbled together check detail shirt could easily be hung from a dock worker; two shirts that should have been discarded are sewn and shot together giving a few more wears as containers are shunted to the end of the pay month.
