As a Cannes festival novice myself it was some intrigue and maybe some trepidation that I started to research the top table event. If I’m being completely honest at least in part, the festivals reputation for being somewhat insular was proving a touch truthful and hard to crack. However after not to much time I found that the trees had parted and the woods were there in full Technicolor. As to be expected with an event that stretches back to the 1930s it comes with a little side story, national pride and the healthy competition that you would expect. However this isn’t a history class so we shall concentrate on the glitz, glamour and who’s wearing who at the mythologized festival.

So first of all what’s it all about, there are a few un-user friendly categories but in short the big three are in ascending order The Ecuumenical Prize, The Grand Prize and the Palme D’Or. The grand prize being second is still a little confusing but shall we just run with it and fingers crossed we shan’t get too tied in knots.

The main contenders usually count for both guts and glory, as the films nominated for gongs somewhat uniquely lists future blockbusters shoulder to shoulder with independent gems, gems that will be polished emerald in the lime tinted light. This year’s most anticipated films include Sean Penn and Brad Pit in the reflective ‘Tree of Life’ and ‘The Skin I Live In’. The latter is an adaptation of the novel ‘Mygale’ which reunites festival favourite Pedro Almodovar with Anonio Bandares for first time since ‘Tie me up! Tie me down in 1990. On a lighter note there is also the new Pirates of the Caribbean flick, and it is always good to see Depp don his faux Keith Richards and marry chaos with cinematic verve.

Now the parties, which there are many! In the fashion stakes two worth a mention are The Replay party and Luis Vuitton’s cocktail party by the pool. I’m thinking boat shoes, chinos and Aviators to be staple for the invite only glitterati. Maybe even a few Club Tropicana styled tennis shorts and woven loafers, socks naturally optional depending on bravery levels; well I can live in hope.
