Fred Perry collaborated with Tibby Wegner to invent the sweatband in the late1940’s and the pair then went on to launch a sports shirt in 1952 (at Wimbledon) with great success, and the Fred Perry clothing brand was born. So Who Was Fred Perry?

Fred Perry is considered by many to have been the greatest male tennis player to have ever played the game. He was the first British player ever to win four Grand Slam events but was despised by the tennis hierarchy and cold shouldered by the Wimbledon crowd because of his working-class background. Fred Perry had a win at all costs attitude that did not suit the sporting etiquette of the elite crowd and Wimbledon snobs. In the late 1940s, Fred Perry was approached by Tibby Wegner, an Austrian footballer. Together they developed a sports shirt, which was to be made from white knitted cotton pique with short sleeves and buttons down the front. The Fred Perry Polo Shirt was an immediate success. The laurel logo was stitched into the fabric of the shirt instead of merely ironed on (as was the case with the crocodile logo of the competing Lacoste brand). The Fred Perry Polo Shirt has enjoyed nothing but success, with its open honeycomb stitch it was perfect as performance wear for tennis. The Fred Perry Polo Shirt was loved by many and adopted by the mod movement, smart enough to wear beneath a suit and cool enough to dance all night long in. They demanded a more varied colour palette from just the standard white with green contrasting edging that had been available until that point. They have continued to be the shirt of choice for diverse groups of teenagers throughout the decades, ranging from the mods, skinheads, suedeheads, soul boys, rude boys two tone, the Northern Soul scene, etc. There was even another short lived subculture known as the Perry boys. In the 1990’s, cool Britannia bands like Blur and Oasis wore the Fred Perry Polo Shirt and today, Fred Perry is still worn by the likes of The Artic Monkeys, Norman Cook and Gwen Stefani, and it is still as stylish and fresh looking as ever. Fred Perry became the first crossover brand from sportswear to streetwear and the original slim fit cotton pique Polo Shirt is still made in England in the cut and fabric as when it was first launched. To this day, the tipped Fred Perry polo has been one of the most enduring and affectionate relationships between British youth culture and a sportswear brand.
