Denim and in particular denim jeans have been at the forefront of fashion for several years. Throughout that time their level of popularity has been cyclical but they have always been one of the mainstays of an individual’s wardrobe.

The name denim originally came from the French town of Nimes where jeans were first produced by the Andre family in the 19th Century. Originally made for workers, jeans were produced to be hard wearing, particularly for those doing manual labour and working in factories.

It wasn’t until the 1950’s that Jeans started to be seen as a fashion item. One of the reasons behind this was the popularity of James Dean the American actor who wore denim in the classic film A Rebel Without A Cause.

The popularity of jeans continued to rise throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s particularly in the USA with brands such as Levis become huge multinational companies on the back of fashion jeans alone. In the 1990’s many new denim brands launched such as the Italian company’s Diesel, DSquared and Replay, the Dutch brand G-Star Raw and American brand PRPS. These company’s used revolutionary new techniques, colours cuts and finishes that took denim away from its stale image to once again bring it to the fore of cutting edge fashion. In the last decade we have seen the launch of several new Scandinavian denim brands like the Nudie Jeans Company, Humor and J Lindeberg.

The Beginnings of Jeans

Although jeans as a fabric marked its beginnings in the 1850's, its popularity as a piece of clothing started only in the 1930's when the cowboy fashion became popularized in Hollywood movies. In the mid 1950's, denim became popular amongst the young who touted them as "jean pants." During this time, owning a pair of jeans was expensive due to regulations of world trade. As trade became more lenient in the late 70's, jeans eventually became high fashion clothing. Henceforth, famous designers started to make various styles of jeans, which further contributed to its popularity all over the world. They now come in different cuts, finishes, shapes, styles and forms to suit different personalities and preferences.

Types of Jeans

There are six general types of jeans that exist today. Specific occasions seem to call for certain types of jeans.

1. Boot Cut Jeans Boot-cut jeans are one of the classic pieces in jeans, and are marked by their relatively flared cuff. They can be used for almost any casual occasion. Since they are extended from the calf, they balance out wide hips and are thus most suited for the wide-hipped.

2. Low-Waist Jeans Low-waist jeans were the 90's. This model is no longer popular today but is occasionally worn by the rather bold.

3. Straight Leg Jeans A pair of straight leg jeans is traditional. They are a safe choice for all body types, but compared to boot-cut style, they are more suitable for formal occasions. 4. Low Rise Jeans Flared jeans are those that are narrow at the knees, yet notably flared at the leg. Flared jeans are usually low-waisted. It created a chic and retro twist to your get-up. They are best worn by tall, slim, and curvy women with a tight-fitted blouse.

5. Skinny Jeans This jeans style was popularised only a few years ago, and is in fact still common in most clothing stores. Slim-fit skinny jeans are marked by their snug fit through the legs and small opening at the leg area. Skinny and tapered jeans are best worn by hipped lean with a pair of shoes at night or trainers in the day.

6. Trousers Trousers are also classic pieces in jeans. They are simply and neat in terms of style, so they are most suited for formal occasions and can be worn to the office as well.

Shopping for the Right Pair of Jeans

Different varieties and styles of jeans have been created for good reasons - specific styles of jeans have to be worn at the right time, by the right wearer. But with all the models made available today through hundreds of jean brands, how do you shop for the right pair of jeans that is best for you? Here are some tips to follow:

1. Choose jeans that best fit your body type. Your jeans of choice must fit your body type best. If you are short-waisted, go for low-cut, hip-hugging jeans that will elongate your body. Those with a long torso must go for jeans that have defined waist lines. The petite will look best on a straight-legged pair of jeans that will create a taller impression. Those with plus sizes will have to focus on balancing the hips, and boot-cut or flared jeans can do the trick.

2. Your jeans of choice must be appropriate with your age There will certainly be an age group where a pair of boyfriend jeans with ripped knees or huge pockets will look more strange than normal. Do realize too that the season for flared and low-rise jeans is already times by-gone. It is good to accept new trends and styles, but consider how your body and attitude changes with the times as well.

3. The jeans must fit the occasion As mentioned earlier, there are styles and varieties of jeans that best fit certain occasions. More formal occasions and office wear call for a straight-legged pair or a pair of trouser-like jeans, while skinny jeans look fab during nights out with the boys.

Jeans that are aPerfect Fit

Once you have decided on a particular style, you will need to make sure that you look good on them in terms of fit. Fit is not equivalent to size. Never buy a pair that does not fit you well, especially in the crotch, waist and hip area.

You will need to make sure that there are no gaps at the back of your waist, and there is enough room in the crotch and thigh area (for keys and wallet). When fitting, check whether they feel comfortable when sitting down. Finally, check out whether the back view looks just as good as it is in the front.

No-No's in Jeans

If you want a pair of jeans that will last you for a while and is versatile to wear on different occasions, go for shades of dark blue or even black. Faded light blue hues or acid-wash denims generally look more casual.

Distressed jeans on the other hand, are offered by big denim brands. When the style is done in moderation, they provide a more lived-in look that will appear fashionable. However, steer clear of distressed splotches and stripes that might look more unpleasant than pleasant.
