Nike may have been a little nervous on Tuesday evening (March 30th) as one of its leading brand ambassadors limped awkwardly from the pitch at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

Wayne Rooney has been pencilled in as a key figure in promoting the sportswear giant at the World Cup in South Africa this summer, with the Times Online suggesting that "deals have been struck, footage shot and promotional material assembled".

Any potential for Rooney to fail to make the tournament due to his ankle injury would be a huge disappointment for the brand and the many fans that may wish to try and emulate his style this summer.

Nigel Currie, director of the marketing and sponsorship company Brand Rapport, fears that Rooney's potential absence could have "a massive impact".

He said that brands "will have based their advertising and marketing on and around him. There will be a few worried people".
