Nike footwear sponsored striker Wayne Rooney has confirmed he will be fit in time to lead England's attempts to win the World Cup in South Africa this summer.

The Manchester United striker had been a concern for the Three Lions since damaging his ankle while playing for his club team recently, but may have calmed the fears of the nation.

He said: "I'm pleased to have done well in a World Cup year, although it has been a difficult last couple of months injury-wise. But if there's any consolation I'll probably be fresher for the World Cup,?¢‚Ǩ¬ù he said.

Rooney will be taking to the field wearing his distinctive Nike footwear  and the sports manufacturer will no doubt be hoping to trump rivals Adidas by seeing one of its players take the golden boot.

Men may wish to follow in the Nike trainers of Rooney this summer by purchasing a pair of the brand's trainers.

Rooney recently picked up the PFA Player of the Year award.
