Nike-sponsored Wayne Rooney is expected to give Christian Ronaldo a run for his money when it comes to how many goals can be put in the back of the net.

Manchester United's win over Liverpool on Sunday (March 21st) pushed the goals the striker has put away to 33 in all competitions, resulting in Sky Bet cutting the player's odds of beating Ronaldo's 42 goals in the 2007-08 season.

The bookmaker has slashed the odds from evens to 10/11 for Rooney to use his head and Nike to bang more goals in than his ex-teammate.

"Rooney has seven league games and five possible European games to try and surpass Ronaldo's 42 goals and if the England international can stay fully fit, he has a great chance of scoring ten or more goals," said football betting spokesman at Sky Bet Tim Reynolds.

Odds of 5/1 are also being offered for the player to pick up all the football industry's awards including BBC Sports Personality of the Year, PFA Players' Player of the Year and the Fifa World Player of the Year.

Rooney's sponsor Nike has told him that if he is the top scorer in this year's World Cup they will give him a £500,000 bonus.
